I love their chicken salad sandwich!

By James from Seattle, USA
Aug/28/2007

Overall

I recently had dinner with my brother Bombom at the Stephanie Smoke Haus. I ordered a number of things from the menu just to try.

In my experience in the United States, steak and smoke houses always included various potato side dishes with your meal. This isn't the case at Stephanie. They have a selection of soups, but that's about as far as it goes.

Piped in via CD or radia was a wide range of light jazz and soft rock. The owners had also clearly gone to some effort to decorate the place in an eclectic style ... ranging from dried flowers to kitchy Tiki. Overall, a nice relaxed atmosphere.

First up was a couple of appetizer sandwiches. The club sandwich was a little strange. Not sure what was on it. Bombom liked it, but I didn't care for the flavor combination.

I also ordered a chicken sandwich for us as an appetizer. Turns out chicken meant chicken salad. I was disppointed until I tasted it. Really very good.

Finally came our T-bone steaks. The steaks were accompanied by classic vegetables (cut green beans, corn, and peas) and a mild, thick butter-garlic sauce.

My steak was good. In reality, it was a strip loin steak with the bone attached. Apparently Filipino butchers don't like to leave any of the tenderloin on the T-bones when they butcher a cow.

It was nice having a steak especially for not having had relatively decent beef for a while. I'd say it was a 170g (6 oz.) steak for P220 ... excluding the bone, of course. It appeared cooked at high temperature on a grill before finishing in the oven as it had a noticable crust on it.

I ordered mine medium and, of course, Bombom ordered his well done. I think the chef rushed our order because his came medium well and mine came medium rare. This wouldn't have been an issue if they'd had real steak knives. We had to suffer with butter knives.

Would I go back for the steak? Probably not. I've been far too spoiled by great steakhouses in the United States and can cook better myself. Plus, I'm not a huge fan of a crust on the steak.

Would I go back for other foods? Certainly. The chicken salad sandwich was really very good. Nice and tangy with lots of chicken meat on toasted Filipino-style (slightly sweeter) white bread. One of those, a soup, and a Coke would make a terrific lunch.

Their menu also included a lot of other dishes which I didn't take much time to peruse as I specifically went to Stephanie for a steak. I'll really have to go back and try more of what they have. Much of it sounded really good.

Liked: their chicken salad sandwich, relaxed atmosphere
Disliked: no potato side dishes, no stake knives, only butter knives
Would I recommend this restaurant to my best friend? certainly, but not for the stake.
